For grown-ups
A seed contains an embryo and a store of food. When it absorbs water, the seed swells and germination begins. First the embryonic root, the radicle, emerges, followed by the stem with two seed leaves, the cotyledons. Growth is guided by gravity and light. A sunflower takes about three months to go from seed to flower.
